What is Paraply? Why does it exist?

Paraply is on a mission to use AI to change how Americans find legal help.

Today, people with serious legal needs find it extraordinarily difficult to find and hire the right lawyer. They wonder: "Law is scary, what do I do?" "Do I need a lawyer?" "What will I get if I hire one?" "How much will it cost?" And of course, "Which one should I choose?"

Paraply is the place where anyone can get instant, expert help answering those questions with the help of AI and top pro bono counsels — for free. We diagnose clients’ needs, explain their options, and help them find the right legal resources to move forward. For law firms, we help pro bono attorneys assist broader audience more efficiently using AI. We pre-vet clients questions and draft a first version answer with AI.

Who are our clients?

Anyone who encounters a legal issue, including landlord tenant disputes, immigration, employment issues, and domestic violence. Our clients all share the same feeling that the legal system is daunting: Few know where to turn, or whom to trust. That’s where we come in – we’re the first place people in crisis turn to find what to do and how to get trusted legal help they deserve.

Is Paraply a law firm?

Paraply is not a law firm, but a nonprofit that allows the public to use our AI powered platform to get generic legal information about their entitled rights and next steps for getting legal help.

What kinds of issues can Paraply help with?

Today, we start with helping California residents with housing issues, including landlord tenant disputes. Paraply is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit registered in Delaware, and we are always free for users to ask their most pressing legal questions.

What's the reason behind the name Paraply?

Paraply is the Swedish word for umbrella, and it is close to the word umbrella in many languages (For example, 'parapluie' refers to umbrella in French). Para means "shielding", and we want Paraply to shield everyone from legal risks due to lack of access to justice.
